Project conclusions

I was pleased that such a large, and motley group of people took the time to respond to my survey, for I attained the outcome that I hoped I would from gun owners and non-owners alike—consistent hypocrisy.  Both gun owners and non-owners were in favor of some form of gun control, yet maintained that a document drafted with the intent of giving states the ability to raise a state militia gave them the unalienable right to one of these potentially fatal instruments.

From doing this project, I learned that it is difficult to gather large amounts of data in a short period of time, and that my results may not be an accurate reflection of society as a whole since the people who participated in this study chose to do so (self-selection), they were not randomly chosen as they would have been had a testing agency performed this same study.

The people who responded to my survey in the commentary box gave me some suggestions for modification, or improvement with this survey.   Although it would have made my data more difficult to quantify, it was proposed that I should have offered more choices for political party, and offered "Don't know" or "Choose not to answer" for the questions on the issues of gun control, concealed weapons, and background checks.   It was also proposed that I should have more precisely  defined what I meant by "gun control," although I purposely left this ambigous, subject to the participant's own interpretation.

One of the most enlightening responses came from a laconic person who wrote: "The right to bear arms, in a non-military setting should be repealed. It only causes more harm than good." But still this point is eloquently countered by another who wrote: "I think we should either all own guns and learn how to use them in public schools so that they become a way of life—as in Switzerland—or they should be highly restricted to everyone as in Japan. Given the current situation in America, I would recommend that everyone learn how to use a gun with confdence, regardless of whether or not they own one."
